What are Extended Realities?

Extended Reality or XR, is a term used to cover several type of user experience that use hand held devices like phones or tablets or head worn devices like headsets and glasses. XR Is made up of Augmented Reality, Mixed Reality and Virtual Reality.

Thats really confusing to here is our explanation of what on earth is going on with all these realities!

Augmented Reality

When we talk about Augmented Reality (AR) in our work we mean overlaying digital content on the real world through a device like a model phone or a tablet. So for a popular maybe familiar example this is how Pokemon Go works for example.

We have worked with AR for several years using it for AR heritage trails and bespoke exhibition pieces.

Mixed Reality

So now Mixed Reality (MR) is a bot like AR (yep confusing) but viewed through a headset so a much more immersive experience using either a headset which looks like a VR headset (it does both) or glasses that use special lenses to project 3d content into the space in front of you. The best thing about MR is that you are always aware of your surroundings and not cut off from your environment. We love MR for pop up communal experiences like our work with POP.XR.

Virtual Reality

Many people are familiar Virtual Reality (VR). using headsets VR experiences provide 100% immersion with a totally digital environment for you to explore.

We like VR for immersive storytelling experiences like our Window to the Soul project.

Working at scale

Our pioneering work in large scale public augmented reality experiences allows us to clearly guide you through the process of designing engaging social experiences. Used in both outdoor and indoor public spaces this technology can be used to improve footfall, dwell times and audience engagement.

"We worked with Urban Tech Creative to explore the use of AR in Ipswich. Their advice in navigating the fast evolving world of AR was invaluable. Our free to use public AR Christmas app, Sammy's Christmas Adventure, was a great success, delivering a truly magical seasonal experience for Ipswich residents and visitors."

“We wanted to tell a story about Ipswich and its unique heritage. Working with Urban Tech Creative allowed us to develop our concept for the Wolsey 550 launch film and create something really spectacular. The use of 3d modelling, visual effects and drone footage created a magical experience bringing to life the architecture of Cardinal Wolsey's 16th century college.”

Kath Cockshaw, Project Director Thomas Wolsey 550.

We offer consultancy and also 3d modelling services for clients developing and delivering augmented reality strategies for their projects through our award winning construct.AR programme.

“As a site manager, it’s important to understand the building in its early stages and this equipment definitely helps with this. The hologram is clear for you to see at scale, and you can also have meetings with multiple users to discuss the design process, saving time and money; a great asset to any build project. I am very much looking forward to continuing to use this technology as the project progresses.”

Richard Reeve, Site Manager from R.G Carter - Digi-Tech Factory
