Sip'Swich – A digital platform for town-wide trails and local discovery

Sip'Swich is a town-wide trail connecting local venues through a simple web app alongside a wider paper-based format. Initiated by Ipswich Central, the project encourages people to explore the town, discover new places, and spend time across Ipswich's independent venues.

Urban Tech Creative developed the Sip'Swich digital platform for Ipswich Central, including the digital stamp collection web app and the main Sip'Swich website, forming the core digital layer of the initiative.

The Stamp Collection App is a lightweight, mobile-friendly web application that enables users to collect digital stamps by scanning QR codes at participating venues. The experience is intentionally frictionless, requiring no app download or account setup. Users can move easily between venues, track their progress across multiple trails, and complete journeys in a way that feels immediate and intuitive.

Alongside ease of use, the platform generates a valuable layer of real-world behavioural data. Without tracking individual users or requiring personal accounts, the system captures when and where QR codes are scanned, how trails are progressed, where completions occur, and how competition entries are distributed. This provides a clear picture of engagement across the town, highlighting patterns of movement, popular venues, and the effectiveness of different trails.

This privacy-first approach allows stakeholders to understand performance and impact without compromising user trust. It offers meaningful insight into footfall and participation, supporting future planning, funding cases, and the ongoing development of similar initiatives.

The main website acts as the central access point for the project, providing clear information about trails, venues, and how to take part, while directing users seamlessly into the stamp collection experience. The site is built using the visual identity and assets developed by What Associates, ensuring consistency across the wider campaign.

From a technical perspective, the platform has been designed as a scalable framework. The structure of trails, venues, and QR-based interactions can be adapted and reused for other locations or themes, positioning Sip'Swich as a repeatable model for digitally enabled trails rather than a one-off intervention.

The project reflects Urban Tech Creative's interest in supporting "third places" — spaces where people gather outside of home and work. By creating a simple, accessible digital layer that encourages movement through the town, Sip'Swich demonstrates how technology can support footfall, strengthen local economies, and reinforce the social fabric of a place.

Early feedback from both users and venue operators has been strong, with the system proving easy to understand and simple to integrate into existing venue operations.
